A number of workers in the services sector of Shiraz Municipality, referring to their difficult job situation, told ILNA: "Throughout the year, in addition to the daily cleaning of the city, in some cases contractors use street sweepers who are under high work pressure in jobs such as loading rubble and desert thorns, washing some schools, private hospitals and stadiums, and portering work in government institutions such as the governor's office and the provincial governorate; whereas these jobs are in no way within the scope of our duties."
According to these workers, on some days contractors, by taking advantage of the street cleaners who are responsible for cleaning and collecting garbage in the city, assign them to unusual jobs; whereas after this heavy work ends, no overtime or remuneration is paid to them, and if they protest, they are threatened with dismissal.
One of these workers, saying that "no benefits or wages are paid to us for this heavy overtime work," emphasized: "The imposition of this work pressure comes while workers live on minimum wages. Over years of service, many colleagues have suffered muscle pains, spinal injuries and joint problems, many of whom now need treatment."
Workers believe that the reduction in physical ability caused by this unconventional work pressure has severely reduced their concentration for performing daily tasks and cleaning the city, and has raised the risk of work-related accidents.
In conclusion, Shiraz municipal services workers, criticizing the performance of city management in using contractor forces for unconventional work, called for an immediate halt to this process, payment of overtime arrears, and a review of work planning to prevent further physical harm to the workforce and the occurrence of unfortunate occupational accidents.
