Tabriz Metro and BRT to Be Free on Tuesdays Until the End of the Year

Tabriz — The Islamic City Council of Tabriz, by approving an urgent plan to join the 'Car-Free Tuesdays' campaign, has made the metro and bus rapid transit (BRT) services free on Tuesdays until the end of the year.

According to Mehr's correspondent, members of the Islamic City Council of Tabriz on Sunday morning, at the council's 347th public session, approved the urgent plan to join the 'Car-Free Tuesdays' campaign. Under this resolution, Tabriz's metro and BRT lines will be provided free of charge on Tuesdays until the end of the year.

The plan is being implemented with the aim of encouraging citizens to use public transport, reducing urban traffic, and helping improve air quality, and is intended to pave the way for greater use of the public fleet in daily trips.

Yaghoub Houshyar, the mayor of Tabriz, referring to the goals of the plan, cited promoting a culture of clean transport and reducing the traffic load on thoroughfares as the pillars of this measure.

Stating that the Tabriz Municipality had also made metro and BRT services free at various times in the past, he said: 'These measures have been taken in view of the city's environmental conditions and the necessity of traffic management, and in implementing the "Car-Free Tuesdays" campaign, facilitating the use of public transport is also a focus.'

The mayor of Tabriz, also referring to the one-month experience of making public transport services free, said: 'According to the statistics provided, citizens' use of public transport increased by 20 percent during this period.'

Houshyar also announced investment in developing the bus fleet, adding: 'Over the past six months, about 400 billion tomans have been spent on purchasing and equipping the bus fleet.'

Implementation of this resolution makes use of the metro and BRT free for citizens on Tuesdays. The extent of the plan's impact on reducing traffic and air pollution will depend on citizens' uptake and the degree to which private-car trips are replaced by public transport.
