The spokesman of the Russian presidential palace (the Kremlin) announced that the country would welcome the introduction of a representative by the European Union to negotiate on the disputed issues.
According to Mehr News Agency, Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with TASS that Moscow would welcome the introduction of a representative by the European Union to participate in the Ukraine negotiations, provided that this representative truly strives for a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
In reaction to the possible introduction of Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland, as Europe's representative in the negotiations, he said: "If there is a representative for negotiation, that is good, but it would be even better if this representative honestly strives to help achieve a peaceful settlement."
This Russian official at the same time criticized the European Union and said Brussels has long been speaking about introducing such a representative, but has not yet taken practical action in this respect.
The discussion of appointing a representative by the European Union for negotiations with Russia over Ukraine has also been raised before. In recent days, the name of the President of Finland has been raised as one of the possible options for this mission, but as of the publication of this report, no official introduction of a representative by the European Union has been announced.
