According to ILNA, Alireza Abbasi, vice-chair of the Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources and Environment Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, explaining today's (Sunday, October 25) meeting of this commission, said: Last year, after the 12-day war, a plan entitled Supporting Agricultural Production and Increasing the Resilience of the Food System for Wartime and Crisis Conditions was started in the commission, and numerous meetings were held in this regard.

He added: This plan was finally decided in the Majlis plenary to be examined in the form of Article 85 of the Constitution, and it was examined in a joint commission that the Majlis had specified, and then sent to the Guardian Council. In today's meeting, the items raised as objections by the Guardian Council's jurists at the Council's research institute were reviewed, with the presence of the commission's members, to summarise and present a report on how this plan is progressing.

Abbasi stated: In this meeting, the necessary explanations were presented, and it was decided that, taking into account the Guardian Council's views, the necessary amendments be made and the plan be sent again to the Guardian Council for final review. The representatives agreed that after obtaining the views of the Guardian Council's jurists, it be presented to the plenary in this same Article 85 format. This plan has been drafted in various fields, including financing, removing obstacles, and the resilience of the food system in wartime conditions.

The vice-chair of the Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources and Environment Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly added: Another of the items reviewed concerned the pricing of wheat for the next crop year and how the wheat farmers' claims from the past crop year were paid. In the budget law, 504 trillion tomans had been foreseen for the guaranteed purchase of wheat, but it did not buy more than 8.5 million tonnes of wheat, and unfortunately the payment of the purchase amount for this quantity of wheat, which was about 420 trillion tomans, also faced numerous ups and downs, most of which was paid last week.

He, referring to the fact that if the government had made suitable purchases it could have bought about 2 to 2.5 million tonnes more so that we would no longer need imports, said: Unfortunately, the government's weak information provision in some cases causes farmers' concern; for this reason, since yesterday a wave has been set off in the country claiming that the government has deducted 1,500 tomans from the price of wheat. The reality is that the government has announced that, because the tools for quality control and protein measurement do not exist in all parts of the country, it has taken the average price of 47,500 to 49,500 tomans as the criterion and set the price at a fixed 48,500 tomans for everyone. From this amount of 48,500 tomans, about 700 tomans is also deducted for wheat insurance.

Abbasi stressed: In fact, the government took the average wheat price as 47 to 49.5 and considered it 48.5, and 700 tomans is also deducted for insurance, meaning about 47,800 tomans is paid to farmers. It would have been better for the government to provide proper information in this field so that this concern was not created among farmers.

The vice-chair of the Majlis Agriculture Commission said: In the continuation of today's meeting, the price of wheat for next year, how to buy it, and the need for review in this field were discussed and exchanged. We must bring the private sector, flour factories and the bourse sector to work so that we can prevent imports. The price approved for next year will definitely be such that it exceeds this year's figure of 504 trillion tomans, and with the private sector alongside, we will solve part of the problems.

This member of the Majlis stated: It was decided that this topic be reviewed in more detail and more specialised form in future meetings, with the presence of sector activists and stakeholders, so that production increases, imports are prevented, and the government is able to pay claims on time.
