Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with TASS that Moscow would welcome the appointment of a representative by the European Union to take part in the Ukraine negotiations, provided that representative genuinely works toward a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
Reacting to the possible appointment of Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland, as Europe's representative in the talks, he said: “It is good if there is a representative for negotiations, but it would be even better if that representative honestly works to help achieve a peaceful settlement.”
The Russian official at the same time criticized the European Union, saying Brussels has long been talking about appointing such a representative but has yet to take any practical step in this regard.
The idea of the European Union appointing a representative for negotiations with Russia over Ukraine has been raised before. In recent days, the Finnish president's name has come up as one of the possible candidates for this mission, but as of the publication of this report, no official appointment of a representative by the European Union has been announced.
