According to "Varzesh3", Lorenzo Musetti, the 24-year-old Italian star, on Sunday night in the final of the Lyon 250 event, ended four years of longing and failure and, with a dazzling display against Taylor Fritz, the second seed, claimed the third title of his professional career. Musetti, who had been waiting for a title since 2022 and had lost seven consecutive finals, this time won decisively 6-3, 6-4, so that after just 80 minutes of battle he could finally taste the sweet flavour of a championship again.

This victory for the Italian star was something beyond a trophy. A glorious end to years of failure and missed opportunities. After winning the final point of the match, Musetti fell to the ground in sheer joy, and moments later, embracing Fritz at the net, he created one of the most emotional moments of his professional career. He who had many times come within a step of the title and returned empty-handed, this time did not let his dream turn into a nightmare once again.

Musetti produced a near-flawless and spectacular display in the final. In the first set, with winning shots from both sides of the court, he seized the initiative and put his American opponent under pressure. The Italian star, who was considered the sixth seed of the tournament, in the second set too maintained his focus and command of the match, gave Fritz no chance of a comeback, and coolly finished the job in the crucial moments. An authoritative display that bore no resemblance to his seven previous failed finals.

But the road to this coronation was nothing less than a cinematic story! Musetti first defeated Luca Van Assche in a three-set battle in the quarter-finals, and then in the semi-finals against his compatriot Flavio Cobolli, he saved four match points. In circumstances where he was a single shot away from elimination, he produced an unbelievable comeback, and now, by winning the Lyon title, he has become the ninth player of the current season to win a title after saving a match point during the tournament; something Ben Shelton also achieved this year at the Dallas and Stuttgart tournaments.

After the title, Musetti, referring to his eventful week, said: This title is completely unexpected. Everything was like a roller coaster! I saved four match points and then played a wonderful final. Before entering the court, my whole body was aching, but when the match started, I put all my focus on the game and I think I produced my best performance. I am truly proud of myself.

The Italian star, who has battled numerous injuries in the 2026 season, named fighting spirit as the most important factor in this success and added: "The fighting spirit was the key to my title. I must thank my team, the medical staff and the physiotherapists who helped me return to fitness. Today I had more mental calm and my game flowed better. This title is like a dream I don't want to wake up from."

This title came in Musetti's second final of the season; a player who, despite physical problems, reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and the last eight of the Cincinnati Masters in August. He has now climbed two places to 24th in the live ATP rankings, and with the win over Fritz, increased his lead in head-to-head meetings with this American opponent to five wins against three losses.

On the other side, Fritz, who had previously won the title in Washington, hoped to seize his second trophy of the season in Lyon. The American star had reached the final without dropping even a set and by beating Tommy Paul in the semi-finals, but in the most crucial match of the tournament he surrendered to Musetti's brilliant display, recording 28 unforced errors, so that his unbeaten run in this event stopped just one step from the trophy.

Despite this disappointment, Fritz climbed one place to 12th in the live Race to the ATP Finals in Turin. He is now 464 points behind Rafael Jódar, the ninth man in this table who holds the last qualifying spot, and next week at the Basel 500 event he will continue his final efforts to close in on Turin.
