Britain Builds Its First Pandemic-Prevention Laboratory with Artificial Intelligence
John Healey, the head of the UK government's finance department, announced a new biosecurity laboratory that uses artificial intelligence to help protect Britain against future pandemics.
John Healey, the head of the British government's finance department, announced a new biosecurity laboratory that uses artificial intelligence to help protect Britain against future epidemics.
According to Mehr News Agency, citing The Independent, this plan is part of an investment package in artificial intelligence.
The British government is investing 100 million pounds, and the companies Anthropic and OpenAI have also committed together to invest 200 million pounds in the first sample of such a laboratory. This laboratory will help develop countermeasures to combat new pathogens.
The establishment of this laboratory is being done alongside the British government's efforts to use artificial intelligence to protect the interests of this country and promote domestic capabilities amid growing concerns about the risks of uncontrolled technology advancement.
Healey will announce more details about this plan in the country's budget, which he says shows a completely British approach to technology. Meanwhile, he acknowledges the concerns of the working class about the rise of artificial intelligence.
Kanishka Narayan, the British Minister for Artificial Intelligence, also announced that this laboratory is a major new global institution that provides world-class scientific expertise to keep the country safe.
As a broader part of this package, another 120 million pounds will be invested in the British AI Safety Institute to develop new standards to protect against the risks of this technology. The plan of the head of the British government's finance department includes an annual allocation of 10 million pounds to understanding how the artificial intelligence industry changes, amid growing concerns about the prospect of jobs disappearing and the way Britain must prepare itself to confront it.
According to Healey, a new center called the "National Exposure and Vulnerability Real-Time Center" (NERV) will also be launched with a budget of 70 million pounds. This center will use artificial intelligence tools to identify cyber threats across the critical infrastructure and economy of Britain.
